First men’s matches at Panathinaiko

It is today the turn of men archer to start shooting at the historic Panathinaiko Stadium in the Olympic competition. The 1/32 Elimination Round started this Monday at 8:30.

In this morning’s first match, Wietse van Alten from the Netherlands escaped from a very uncomfortable situation. He had a very tight match with El Salvadorean Ricardo Merlos 152-151. Merlos was still leading the match by 3 points after the fifth end, but shooting two times 7 with his final arrows let the victory to van Alten. "Although I lost the match, I am happy with my performance and I believe that I did my best", said Merlos.

In the other match of the first session, the 3rd ranked Italian Ilario di Buo progressed to the 1/16 with a 151-146 victory over Swedish Mattias Eriksson. "I am happy to be here, in the Olympics and I am looking forward to the next round", he said.

This morning’s 100% Mexican match saw the victory of Juan Rene Serrano over his compatriote Eduardo Avelino Magana on the score of 148-138. At the same time, Marco Galiazzo of Italy serenely won his match by 156 to 122, beating the exotic competitor from Tonga, Sifa Taumoepeau.
