Mexican betrayed by his nerves, British not

In the first match of the afternoon, 20-year old Mexican archer, Juan Rene Serrano, was betrayed by his nerves in his 1/16 match with European Champion Marco Galiazzo. Still leading after the fifth end, Serrano scored 24 points only with his final three arrows, not enough to defeat the Italian who shot 28. The final result of this confrontation was 164-163. "I am very satisfied, everything was fine. I prepared very well for the game", Galiazzo said after his qualification.

Later in the afternoon, 2 seed Magnus Petersson from Sweden was surprisingly defeated by 31st British Laurence Godfrey on the tight score of 163-162. "It really comes down to millimetres. A couple of his shots were just inside the line and that made the difference", said Petersson.

The 1996 Olympic Silver medallist was in danger from the very beginning of his match with the sole British male archer competing in Athens. On his approach to competition shooting, Godfrey said: "Just take one arrow at a time and see what I have got at the end. I knew I needed a good shot with my last arrow and though they unofficially said it was a 9, I never celebrate until the fat lady sings.
