Thirteen nations aiming at Gold

The 1/8 Elimination Round of the Men’s Team competition started this morning at 8:30 with the match between Sweden and the United States. This first confrontation led to a semi-surprise, with team USA being victorious on the score of 246-242

With Magnus Petersson and Mattias Eriksson, who were both in the Sweden team that won the silver medal at the 2003 World Championships in New York, it was thought that they had the ability to win a medal. But in this match, the experienced Americans, Richard "Butch" Johnson (48 years old), John Magera (34) and Vic Wunderle (28), proved more consistent than their opponents. "Our goal is to win a medal", said Vic Wunderle after his team’s victory.

Lead by its newly individual silver medalist, the Japanese are certainly the team who left the best impression in these 1/8 rounds. With an excellent score of 254 (the Olympic Record being 258), they easily defeated France to progress to the quarterfinals where they will meet the Ukrainian team that encountered no resistance from host team Greece (243-225).

In the other two 1/8 matches – Korea, Chinese Taipei and Italy had a bye for this round – the Netherlands won over Mexico 244-234, while Australia beat the Indian team on the score of 148-236. "I enjoyed the match and now we are ready for our next opponent, Chinese Taipei", Sydney Gold Medalist Simon Fairweather said after Australia’s victory.
