Korea’s third win ends golden Games

Korea confirmed its standing as the world’s premier archery nation by winning its third gold medal on the final day of competition at Panathinaiko Stadium.

The trio of Im Dong Hyun, Park Kyung Mo and Jang Yong Ho combined to win the men’s team event, beating a gallant Chinese Taipei 251-245 in the 27-arrow final.

Ukraine won the bronze medal, beating the United States 237-235 in the minor final when Viktor Ruban shot a perfect ten on the final arrow of the match.

For Korea, the win was their third gold medal of the week. They won the women’s team and individual gold medals. The other gold medal was won by Italy’s Marco Galiazzo in men’s individual.

The triple gold medal haul mirrors Korea’s three gold medals from the Sydney Olympics and also the 2003 world championships.

Under a blazing Athens sun, Korea was tested in every round of competition. They beat The Netherlands 250-249, then Ukraine 242-239 after trailing during the early part of the semi-final.

In the final, Chinese Taipei’s trio of Chen Szu Yuan, Liu Ming Huang and Wang Cheng Pang put a fright through the confident Koreans with some excellent early shooting. However, Korea steadied under the experienced leadership of Jang, who was also part of his nation’s gold medal team in Sydney and silver medal team in Atlanta in 1996.

Ukraine’s Ruban, Dymtro Hrachov and Oleksandr Serdyuk celebrated their bronze with style, signing autographs for dozens of fans during the gold medal match.

After receiving their gold medals, the Korean men were joined by the three Korean women gold medalists, Yun Mi Jin, Lee Sung Jin and individual champion Park Sung Hyun, in the centre of the stadium. Along with Korean archery officials and coaches, they received a standing ovation as a memorable week of archery came to a joyous and celebratory finale.
